Tottenham Hotspur winger Ivan Perisic might have played his last game for the North London club as the 34-year-old suffered a complex Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury during a non-contact training session on Wednesday.
Perisic will undergo knee surgery in the next few days after which he will continue his rehabilitation which will keep him out for the rest of the season.
"We can confirm that Ivan Perisic has suffered a complex Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury in his right knee," the club confirmed in a brief statement.
"The experienced Croatia international sustained the injury in non-contact training and will undergo surgery.
"Ivan will then commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff and is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the season."
Perisic's career with Tottenham might have been over already as he will most likely be fit enough to play in April or May, depending on his recovery, and the Croatian footballer is in the last year of his contract which will expire in June 2024.
Perisic was a key member of Antonio Conte's side last season as he was starting games regularly but he is now more of a squad player for new head coach Ange Postecoglou as he has featured in six games for the North London club this season, mostly as a substitute.
Coming off the bench, the 34-year-old played a key role in Spurs' 2-1 win over Sheffield United.
He came on in the 80th minute as a substitute and assisted for Richarlison's equaliser with an in-swinging corner before then playing one of the final passes in the build-up to Dejan Kulusevski's winner.
Spurs will now hope his absence will not hurt them too much as they prepare for their huge encounter with fierce rivals Arsenal in the north London derby this Sunday.
Apart from Spurs, the 34-year-old has also played for big teams like Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Club Brugge, and Wolfsburg.
